LEWIS E. LOVE MEMORIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION AWARD - FAQs

How did this all get started?

The Great Neck North Class of '63 planned to invite Mr. Love to its
reunion. Unfortunately, he died several months prior to that event. The
class decided to honor his memory with an award in his name that
spoke to his inspired teaching.

What is the purpose of the award?

To enhance the teaching of science in the Great Neck Public Schools.

Who can apply for the award?

Any full-time tenured teacher in the Great Neck Public Schools– not necessarily a science
teacher –may apply on behalf of his or her school.

How is the award funded?

There will be an endowment - the goal is $250,000 - that will be managed
by the Great Neck Public Schools at no cost. Awards will be granted from
the money earned by the endowment,  the corpus of which is inviolable.

Are gifts to the award tax-deductible?

Gifts will be by check made out to the Great Neck Public Schools and
therefore are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

How much is the award?

Up to $10,000 annually.

The award my not exceed the amount of interest earned by the endowment in a year.
Unspent funds are returned to the endowment.

How can the award money be spent?

The award may be spent on a project, equipment for a project,
educational opportunity for students, or anything else that contributes to science education in
the Great Neck Public Schools.
Projects can be longer than one year; however, the funding of any project is subject to the amount of interest in the Award Fund in the year the project is initiated.

Who decides on the recipient?

There is a committee made up of teachers and students, rotating every
year. Committee members are not eligible to apply for the award on behalf
of their schools in the year they

serve on the committee.

Why don't the alumni or donors make the decision as to who gets the award?

The people who worked with the schools to design the award felt that in
order for it to continue in perpetuity, there had to be a mechanism for
awarding it that went beyond the ability of the Class of '63 to be involved,
and that the donors and alumni did not have the competence to judge applications.
