After GNN, I went to Hobart College, The Chicago Medical School, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for internship, two years in the US Public Health Service serving as a general medical officer with the Coast Guard (including three months in the Artic on an icebreaker) and Cedars-Sinai for psychiatric training program.
I met and married my wife, Laurel, in LA and practiced psychiatry for three years there. Perhaps the greatest event of our lives was the birth of our twins.
We moved to Redwood Valley in rural Mendocino County, California, where I opened my private practice. In 1983 we dropped out for two years and travelled with the children, first, in the US in a motorhome and then to Kauai.
We returned to Redwood Valley and continued home-schooling our children through 7th grade. Our children did superbly in school and went to Yale and Wesleyan Universities. Ultimately Gabe went to medical school and is now a married family practice doctor in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Katie pursued a PhD in psychology. She has given us our first grandchild with a second on the way. She is married and practices in Fresno.
Laurel and I have stayed very physically active with long-distance bike-riding as our major activity.
Eight years ago, we took a year off and travelled literally around the world. A year and a half ago, our big adventure was a trip to West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. We volunteered at an NGO program that has a medical clinic, (where I worked), a rainforest conservation program and an organic farming program. I am now on the board of this organization hoping to preserve one of the major remaining rainforests and improving the lives of the very poor local population. (Anybody have any interest, enthusiasm or skills to bring to this project, please see Health in Harmony website.)
We would welcome visits from any classmate who happens to be in our neck of the woods.
